Class is in session! 1850s Schoolhouse turned Adorable Cottage | Keymar, MD

This adorable stone house was once a schoolhouse built in the 1850s. It has so many historic features, like a stone fireplace, hand-built wooden stairs, reclaimed wood hickory cabinets in the kitchen, and a vintage claw-foot tub that make you really feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The cottage is just 25 minutes from Frederick, MD, which I’ve driven through many times. It’s an adorable little town with a historic downtown and lots of great shops and restaurants and festivals. And it’s also close to some great wineries, which is always a plus! Comfy/cozy cottage after a day of wine -touring? Yes, please!

Book your stay at this property

This property is named “Firefly Cottage” due to the amount of fireflies you can see if you visit in the early summer! Right now it’s booked for the summer but keep your eyes open for a cancellation or see if late April/early May might work for you!

This historic cottage sits on over an acre of land on a wooded lot that really makes you feel remote and cozy. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, it sleeps 4 people (which includes pets) and the owners don’t charge a pet fee. It seems like it would be great for a small family getaway, a trip with your best friends, or a young couple with dogs.

Here is what some of the reviewers had to say about their stay:

-“Firefly cottage is a little piece of heaven tucked away in the farmlands of Maryland. Starting from the drive up the driveway you feel like you’re being transported to a far away place. The house is beautifully decorated – playing into its history and country feel – yet offers all of the amenities you could need (full kitchen, tv, Wi-Fi, music, etc… annnd claw foot tub, extra comfy bed upstairs, etc).”

-“My husband and I have stayed at many airbnbs, but this was by far our favorite. The cottage was so cozy and beautifully decorated. The claw foot tub was so relaxing. The beds were heaven and we had so much fun relaxing by the fire while listening to records. Laura was so accommodating and was easy to get in touch with. We loved, loved, loved this cottage! It truly is the perfect getaway! So fun to stay here in the winter too!”

“We had a most relaxing and comfortable stay in this utterly charming cottage. There were
personal and thoughtful touches throughout. It’s obvious that a lot of love and care went into this place. Also, it is dog friendly, but the place is immaculate!! Laura is a kind, responsive and generous host. I hope to stay again!”

Some things to note: one guest recommended bringing an extra sweater for downstairs because it felt a little chilly in the winter. This is a pet-friendly house, but the number of people allowed also includes pets, so no more than 4 humans/pets allowed during the stay. Also, there is a burn ban in place to protect the forest in the hotter months, but the fireplace is able to be used October 1st – March 31st and the fire pit is allowed as long as a burn ban isn’t in place. So this might be something you’d want to check in with the owners about ahead of time. All in all, it seems like a relaxing getaway within reach of a great little town with lots to do!
