Stay in this abandoned zoo-turned boutique hotel! | Catskill, NY

If you’re wild at heart or just like unique experiences, check out this abandoned zoo that was renovated and turned into a boutique hotel! Each guest suite was named after one of the zoo animals and the owners managed to preserve the character of the zoo by decorating the hotel with old signs and other fun artifacts from the zoo. I would love to visit and learn more about what it was like back in its heyday!

Book your stay at this property

This one is so popular I couldn’t find any available dates in the near future! Keep checking back for future openings or cancellations!

What you get here is a guest suite (The Giraffe Room) in what once was “The Old Catskill Game Farm”, which at one time was America’s largest and first privately owned zoo. The zoo was operational for 77 years and eventually closed in 2006.

The Giraffe Room features a memory foam king bed, a 3-person jacuzzi in the main room, and an en suite bathroom with a walk-in rainshower.

You also have access to some shared spaces including a full kitchen, game room, hot tub and a fire pit. This room is pet-friendly (not sure if you can bring a giraffe though!)

In addition to the giraffe room, there are 4 other guest rooms and 4 upscale glamping sites.

While you’re here, you can explore the 200 acre abandoned zoo and walk the 3.5 miles of paved walkways. The zoo once housed over 2,000 animals including giraffes, rhinos, pigmy hippos, and cappybara.

Here’s what people are saying about this gem:

“Unique & amazing little listing in upstate NY! Would definitely return. Well-situated and away but close enough drive to a number of great restaurants/hiking options. The in-room jacuzzi was a great touch and nice to have an outdoor hot tub as well. Staff were extremely hospitable/friendly, and the unexpected amenities of coffee/snacks/even some breakfast meals were great touches. Highly recommended.”

“Wonderful stay! The room was clean, the shower and tub were so relaxing! The animals were lovely, there was a peacock there too! We loved the fresh eggs, the communal kitchen and beverage station. Walking around the property was a nice experience as well.”

“This is a little oasis and we really enjoyed our stay. Blake was very communicative and the directions were easy to follow. The surroundings are really quirky and interesting, the giraffe room was clean and beautifully decorated. The walks around the abandoned zoo are a must! Free tea/coffee and communal kitchen area was a nice option. Highly recommend!”
