Where to stay if you want to survive a Zombie Apocolypse | Kimberly, AL

Zombies beware! This Airbnb has all you need to survive the next zombie apocalypse, and it’s actually advertised for just this purpose! You will be staying in an authentic 1966 German UNIMOG that was featured in both the Hunger Games and The Walking Dead! There’s even dried “zombie blood” on one of the windows left over from filming (or so we think it’s from filming!)

After reading through the description on Airbnb, I learned that a UNIMOG was a heavy-duty all-terrain vehicle built by Mercedes-Benz for extremely rugged conditions. The owners converted this one into an RV and built a multi-level dock with a tower for extra sleeping (and survival) options. Located just 30 minutes north of Birmingham and close to the Locust Fork River and hiking trails, this Airbnb gives you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in nature.

Book your stay at this property

This one is wide open and at only $92/night, it’s easy on the wallet too, although you probably won’t be thinking about money once the zombies start roaming around!

The UNIMOG is part of the Case Rock Eco Retreat, which is 105 acres of forest near the Locust Fork River. There are quite a few things to take into consideration before booking this Airbnb. First of all, it is inaccessible by car so a staff member will meet you and drive you in a UTV to the RV location about 1 mile from the meeting point. It IS pet-friendly, but not kid-friendly (at least not to children under the age of 6 due to safety concerns).

On the ground level, you have a memory foam futon in the UNIMOG, but also a kitchen with a one-burner propane stove, a composting toilet, and an outdoor shower (with a propane water heater). On the second level, you have an open-air sleeping loft that sleeps 2 (you must bring your own sleeping bag/linens, pillow, etc). On the third level is an observation tower, perfect for keeping watch for the zombies.

Mosquito netting is provided, but it’s recommended to bring bug spray. You also have solar panels and an on-site generator, drinking water from a water dispenser, and important to note is that there is no wifi and cell phone reception can be spotty.

The owners want to make sure that you know what you’re getting into so they very thoroughly describe the camping amenities and even require you to read the description in full where they have included a code word that you need to include in your message to book the Airbnb. All of this gave me a little hesitation, BUT then I read the reviews and saw that people are LOVING this experience and especially the hosts.

Here are the most thorough and informative reviews:

-“MOG Mountain is exactly as advertised. Such a unique experience! The bed inside slept great and has plenty of room. The overnight low was about 40F but the space heater inside the MOG kept it warm. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans and utensils. The fire pit was perfect and they kept me well stocked with firewood. The outdoor shower was great. And the property is amazing. So secluded and private and the river is gorgeous. Perfect weekend getaway and I’ll definitely be back.

“If you like nature and adventure with comfort… THIS IS IT! So much fun!!! The trail ride to the MOG was a blast! There is everything needed to have a perfect evening roughing it without anything rough! 🤣 We HIGHLY recommend purchasing the cookies… AMAZING!”

“This place is fantastic. The thoughtfulness put into not only the MOG Mountain location but the entirety of the property was evident throughout, and made for a wonderful weekend. So much attention to details – from the vintage maps in the MOG, to the sheer genius of the construction and layout of the structure around the vehicle, to the hand-painted signage everywhere, it all made this a true “getaway”. Most AirBnBs put you close to the destination and give you a good place to eat & sleep while you venture out and explore. But here, MOG Mountain and Case Rock ARE the destination. True, you can’t really easily leave the property once you’re here, but why on earth would you want to? Glenn and Roxanne were two of the kindest and most responsive hosts I’ve ever come across in the AirBnB community. I have never had a more thorough and welcome check-in / check-out. Hand-painted maps of the property, a “how-to” YouTube video, a “Valentine’s special” welcome gift of champagne and chocolate strawberries, a massive pile of firewood, flawless prompt communication and respect for privacy. Can’t ask for anything more! We’ll be back!”

So after reading through this article, are you up for this one? Let’s just say if the zombies start coming, I know where I’m heading!
