This Rustic 1935 Barn has been transformed into a Luxury Farmhouse! | Palmer, Alaska

Less than an hour outside of Anchorage, Alaska, you will find this historic barn-turned luxury farmhouse near the quaint little town of Palmer. The barn was originally part of the Matanuska Colony, which was a housing/farming community established in 1935 as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. At the time, struggling families were offered money to relocate to this part of Alaska and begin farming the land. During this time, many colony houses and barns like this one were built to accommodate the families.

This region eventually became known as Alaska’s agricultural heartland due to its fertile soil and up to 19 hours of sunlight in the summer. Farmers began winning competitions at the State Fair for their gigantic cabbages and pumpkins! This is such a fascinating history! Now times have changed, what once was a place that the government had to pay people to visit, people are now paying a lot to see the beauty of this area for themselves.

This house will have you living a bit more luxuriously than the original tenants lived. It has been renovated and beautifully updated in a rustic farmhouse style. The house has a master bedroom upstairs with a king bed, private deck, and a luxury bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower. On the main level downstairs, there is a fully stocked kitchen, a wood-burning stove, and a full bathroom. This one would be perfect for a romantic getaway with your honey!

Did I mention this house also comes with a Tiny House?! The tiny house has a queen bed, blackout curtains, and a toasty heater. (I didn’t read anything about a bathroom in the tiny house so I’m thinking this would be a great option for a family with teenage kids or a young couple who don’t have to get up to go to the bathroom in the night!)

The owners provide snowshoes in the winter months. Sounds very “Alaska” to me! They also have a farm store on the property where they sell flowers and jars of honey!

Many past guests loved the location, close enough to grocery stores, but far enough away to feel nicely secluded. It’s also located 15 minutes from the Government Peak Recreation Area which offers great cross-country skiing trails and 25 minutes from Hatcher Pass, which is also known for excellent hiking. The town of Palmer is also home to the Alaska State Fair and lots of local farms, restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries. I’m already dying to add this one to my travel list!

This house has 5 stars on Airbnb. Here are some reviews showing why people love this place so much:

-If you’re ever looking for a place to stay in Alaska, look no further as this place is truly incredible and will exceed your expectations!! My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and could not have asked for a more beautiful and amazing place to stay. It’s more incredible in person than in the pictures and we look forward to staying here again in the future!!

“We have yet to stay in an Airbnb twice but we’re coming back! This place is ideal for a weekend break. It’s cozy, it’s comfortable, and we couldn’t get over the kitchen. If you like waking up to gentle sunlight then sleep in main bedroom. If you need something darker than your coffee then the tiny home is the place for you. Perfectly located for a convenient grocery run while not being too traffic noise heavy. Comfortable beds, retro fixtures and furnishings, well stocked kitchen, and a bathtub someone 5’ 10” can luxuriously stretch out in. We loved this place and we hope to make a habit of coming here.”

“Absolutely stunning, very warm, so many nice touches – welcome basket with snacks, robes, washer and dryer etc. close enough to things in town or other excursions we wanted to do, nice and quiet. I t was a winter wonderland, I can’t imagine what it would be like in the summer! Be sure to check out the little farm store they have! And Sarah had great recommendations!”

Alaska is a long way from home for me, but I’m thinking this farmhouse would be totally worth the trip! What do you think?
